WELCOME to the SPEW!

Within these walls you will find the articles, posts, blurbs and musings I have written since Arnel's joining Journey. I am your average, run-of-the-mill Journey fan - NOT!!! This is not to say I'm an extreme Journey freak either. I'm just a middle aged, lifelong musician who has held Journey as his favorite band since the first time I heard Patiently blaring from a car in the parking lot of my high school in Dublin, CA back in 1978. 1978.... Man, what a Journey it has truly been for both the band et al and myself as well. I have been fortunate enough to have met most of the members of the band past and present including all of the members of the current lineup. Being a lifelong keyboard player, it's not a large leap to guess Jon is the member with who, I identify most. He is the God of my musical world and anyone who plays keyboards and writes music knows he is the wingnut that keeps and has kept this band together over the years and is the key element in their ability to remain fresh and come up with new music to offer year after year. I consider myself a rock music trivia expert with an emphasis on Journey of course. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bragging, I have spent my entire life with at least one foot firmly planted in the music business in some way or another. I've spent a lifetime following rock music, its contributors and its always colorful history.

So, make yourself at home. There is plenty to read here and with any luck I'll always be adding more. If you find something interesting please leave me a comment - I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions so long as they are constructive and positive. I receive a lot of requests for permission to copy and repost my articles on other sites. I have no problem with that and in fact I'm flattered that you find my stuff worthy of reposting and sharing. The only thing I ask is that the content not be edited or altered in any way and that I am given credit for the post. That's it. Pretty simple huh?

It's an awesome time to be a Journey fan! Arnel's energy, humility and abilities have injected new life into this band in so many ways. Thanks for stopping by and may God bless you!

One Night in Manila Nearly Forty Years in the Making

I spoke with Arnel approximately 1 week prior to the band’s departure for Manila where the band and crew would setup camp and use as their launching point for their performances in that region. He was so nervous about the upcoming show there at the Mall of Asia. When I asked him why he told me he was scared he would forget the lyrics to songs or worse, he would have a case of stage fright so severe that he would open his mouth and nothing would come out. I acknowledged that he would indeed b

Have you ever had a dream which included Journey in some way or another? Pfft!!... Stupid question. I forgot who I was talking to for a sec...

To Move or Not To Move...... Decisions, Decisions....

I am perplexed as to what I'm going to do with regards to taking up residence at the new site. Don't get me wrong, the new site it very robust and has lots and lots of cool features - it's very nice! On the other hand, this site is very familiar and comfortable, at least to me anyway. I like the layout and it's very easy to navigate. The other mitigating factor is the move itself - ugh! So for now, I'm going to continue to inhabit my little slice of heaven right here while at the same time, cont… Continue

Journey's Arnel Pineda Now a Bonafide International Rock Star

Forgive me if I wax poetic just a tad bit but, the band's recent trip around the world, as it were, has brought about a heightened awareness and majority acceptance of The Little Singer That Could.

For all intents and purposes AP's very first gig with Journey in Chile, served to indemnify his status as an "international rock artist". However, that show was the world's first taste of what many of us knew would soon be the phenomenon he came to be. In many ways, he was an instant success by me

What a year it has been. And the next is shaping up to be even better!

February 21st, 2008, marked the dawn of a new era for iconic supergroup Journey as guitarist Neal Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, bassist Ross Valory, and drummer Deen Castronovo would present to their fans in South America and around the globe via the internet, their new lead singer Arnel Pineda as they performed together for the first time at the Vina del Mar music festival in Chile. Another 10 days or so would pass before quality footage of their entire show became available for downloadContinue

It's been far too long since anything has spewed from the depths of my soul. Additionally, for those of you who have been so encouraging of the drivel that is The Spew, you'll be interested to know I've begun writing a book that will be a biography of Journey. ARNEL and LEARN Are Spelled With the Same Letters. Coincidence?

If Arnel’s time in the limelight were to end today, would you be able to say you’ve learned something from him? Before you hyperventilate and fire off those flaming PM’s to me for even mentioning such a thing, take a deep breath, take another one and read on. The question is rhetorical and posed for the sole purpose of stirring your thoughts; to provoke a pondered answer. Trust me……. AP’s ride on the Journey train is just getting started. He’s going to be around for a long, long time to come.Continue

Dr. Pineda, You’re Needed On Stage.

Journey's future and its entire legacy hung in the balance. Neal's next move would inevitably decide the success or the demise of one of the greatest bands in history. The quagmire had resulted from the band having lost its lead singer 3 times in 10 years. Journey's catalog requires a very specific vocal dynamic which narrowed the field of candidates for a replacement. Added to that is the risk of a total loss of its fan base due to yet again another disappointment if the next person to takeContinue

JOURNEY WAS BLAZING HOT IN PHOENIX, AZ!!

First things first. Stand up and take a bow Phoenix, you represented the desert southwest proudly!! I was worried this show would not sell out due to the fact that Cricket Pavilion seats roughly 20,000 people and Heart was not on the bill which meant our ticket sales as a whole would be dependent upon Journey/Cheap Trick fans. I was elated to discover that I had absolutely nothing to worry about. When I asked, I got conflicting answers regarding whether or not it was indeed a sell out. What I ca… Continue

PHOENIX, AZ!! PART II: THE SHOW REVIEW

Dateline: Phoenix, AZ October 3rd, 2008

There was just enough time following the Meet & Greet to hit the restrooms, grab a cold pop and make our way to our seats before show time. The place was packed! I was sooooo proud to see the venue so full. It served to assure that PHX has and will continue to be a guaranteed stop on the tours to come.

It's My Turn! JOURNEY COMES TO PHOENIX!!

Finally!! After 4 months of waiting, reading the dailies and watching countless videos on YT, Journey comes to Phoenix! When the tour schedule was released, October 3rd seemed light years away. But in all honesty, I can't believe how fast the time has gone by. As of this post, the show is not sold out, which doesn't surprise me but still bums me out. The absence of Heart on the bill eliminates those who would have purchased tickets had they been. Still though, with a capacity of nearly 17,000 pe… Continue

AP's Intriguing Story, Voice Will Resurrect Old, Recruit New Fans: PART 3

At the beginning of March, like most of us here, I anxiously watched AP’s debut as Journey’s new lead singer in their performance in Chile. The following day I collected the thoughts I had regarding his performance, the future of Journey and my take on the plans to re-record the classics and authored the post attached below.
Since it was originally posted, I revisited it and examined the predictions and thoughts I had stated to see how much of what I had written had been proven to be accurate. S… Continue

Something Nice From.........ME!

In the spring of 2005 I was asked by some very close friends of mine to play at their wedding - during the ceremony, a song which I had never heard and which we didn't know if the sheet music was even available. These kids mean a Hell of a lot to me and even though it was going to be iffy as to whether or not we'd get the music, I agreed. A few days later I got a call from my friend Kirk who had found the sheet music. He rushed over with music and the CD of the artist in hand and notified me I h… Continue

I'm a Journey Fan, Are You?

AUTHOR'S NOTE: I'll warn you ahead of time the following spew is deep. It's very profound. It's an attempt to harness what the 'it' factor is about Journey. It's this writer's theory based on what I know to be true about the human condition, the mind of a Journey fan and the knowledge obtained as a result of minoring in psychology. I don't profess this to be anything other than a summation of the things I've observed and the things I know to be true in my own life.

The Spew Finds a Home

I think it's fairly important that I state right from the start that a writer I am not. English Literature and English were among my worst subjects in school. Hated both subjects. Only after venturing into adulthood, which requires a bit more obligatory reading, (contracts, arrest warrants, eviction notices, subpoenas..... you get the idea) did I begin to realize how rewarding it can be to manipulate words in such a way that the things authored by someone can reach people, move people to laughte… Continue

Coming Soon to a Venue Near You: The Arnel Pineda Show!

Everyone, it seems, is anxiously looking at their watches. It’s been 25 minutes since Heart took their final bow. Everything appears to be ready as the stage, packed with road crew members of both Heart and Journey and teeming with activity just a few minutes ago, is now vacant and quiet. “Won’t be long now” you overhear one person say as they and everyone else in attendance is anticipating that feeling. That feeling that completely consumes your body with goose bumps when, without warning, the… Continue

The Present

Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them - work, family, health, friends and spirit … and you’re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls - family, health, friends and spirit - are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must unders… Continue

You're welcome. I like giving virtual gifts to friends and relatives. Love reading your write ups about Arnel and Journey. Whenever your book is ready about Journey, I'll buy a copy.

I've been living in Canada since 1985, native born Canadians say eh often, but I can't recall using eh as the last word in any my sentences...probably in very rare moments I use it in the beginning of the sentence when speaking to my nieces and nephews who were born here. Or maybe it was hey...oh well...

I did my very best to convince my relatives and friends to watch Journey's concert with me last year. I keep saying the lead singer is a Filipino. But my circle of friends and relatives are pop, RnB, and classical music fans...rock is not their genre at all. As much as my almost 70 year old Mom does not even like contemporary music how could she like rock? But mothers are Mothers, they love us too much, she went with me, after relating the inspiring story of Arnel. I was surprised. She likes Journey's music, especially Open Arms. She even said Jonathan Cain is very attractive and talented (playing three musical instruments). She likes Jon but to me Deen is the most attractive in the band and with great vocals too with singing "Mother, Father", and playing the drums at the same time.

Some of my friends were impressed with Revelation CD/DVD (my Christmas gift to them), but I had to order the CD/DVD's at Journey's website via a friend in the States. Next time Journey visits Toronto, hopefully my friends will watch them too. Thank you for writing Walmart about Journey in Manila dvd...I hope I'll get them before Christmas...
